OUGD601 - Tutorial 4/5

OUGD601 - Tutorial 4/5

Feedback:

  • Introduction is based off historical points and name the main people who I will talk about in formal language
  • When talking about design work use it to solidify the point
  • Intro in Chapter 1 needs a Postmodern historical introduction into the essay before I talk about the principles
Practical:
  • Ways in which clarity can be style at the same time - need for cultural clarity
  • Incorporating stylistic qualities of other cultures for clarity and style
  • brief for principles I will criticise for contemporary practice

To Do:

  • Finalise practical and start work on it

OUGD601 - Website Research

OUGD601 - Website Research

When searching for existing design history websites, a very limited number of results appeared and almost all had an abundance of information presented to you. Some were not particularly aesthetically pleasing, which is important as it must appeal to designer’s/budding designers as they are the websites primary audience. All formatted their sites to be timelines but all focused mainly on the history and not on the impact they had and the key principles of the movements. Outlining these into sub categories can make the websites more user-friendly.  Some websites listed the history in one, long essay of writing. This can intimidate users and is not approachable when searching for specific movement. Dividing the movements for people to select will not require endless scrolling and searching, making the website easier to use.

OUGD601 - Tutorial 3/5

OUGD601 - Tutorial 3/5

Feedback -

  • As an introduction to Modernist design it reads OK but there is a bit of confusion in the first paragraph because Boyne and Rattansi's book is about POSTmodernism therefore your quotes are about this rather than modernism. Also, i think you could do with introducing Modernism broadly in the first instance as being something that emerged from dramatic and rapid changes in Western societies.
  • Although there isn't much opportunity for triangulation in the first paragraph you should always be trying to substantiate your understanding of the topic through 2 or more sources. Just bare this in mind as you start going into more critical detail.

To Do:

  • Change quotes in introduction
  • Use more sources
  • Clear plan for practical
  • Write up brief for practical

OUGD601 - Tutorial/Finalise Essay Plan

OUGD601 - Tutorial/Finalised Essay Plan

Tutorial Notes:

  • After looking at my reevaluated essay plan, Simon helped reform my finalised essay plan and I now feel confident to start writing
  • Use JSTOR
  • Read and write at the same time!
  • For next tutorial - Start writing Chapter 1 and list sources that I will use for Chapter 2

Final Essay Plan -

Graphic Design: Are there anymore rules left to break?

What is the status of design principles in contemporary visual culture?

Contents

list of illustrations

Introduction

Chapter 1 - Contexts

Setting the scene - ‘such and such describes modernism as…’

Picking all of the principles apart, what principles mean in graphic design. How these principles are communicated through graphic design

Vignelli Canon - extract what his principles are- relate it to the ones now
Wolfgang Wenigart - different principals, developed and updated them

modernism vs. post modernism principles

  • Universal Meaning
  • Limited Colour palettes
  • Mathematics, harmony and unity
  • Structuralism

  • Irregularity of space and type
  • Writerly rather than Readerly text
  • Post-Structuralism
  • Deconstruction

Modernism and Postmodernist principles and how what they were doing at the time influenced contemporary graphic design (not necessarily in chronological order) talking about the principles - what they are and how how they relate to the ones now.
- Criticise contemporary modernism

Establish formed principles and ethical principles

  • Modernist beliefs that design could solve the problems of social class etc.
  • Designers refocus their efforts onto social responsibility
  • Role of graphic designers – should we have responsibilities? Meaning in design? do we only find    this now through political activism?

Chapter 2 - technology

What the point is of chapter 1 - can’t be relevant anymore now because of the characteristics of the state of today - globalisation
  • no unity as everything is online, abundance of images

(speed of communication and the availability of tools and sources)
Advancement, tools how this plays a part
InDesign is based on the grid, modernist principles embedded within this

Looking at untrained specialists, are they valid?

Online/internet - applications which will create graphic design for you

Relate to the DIY designers

gifs, memes etc - anyone can create them, they are also visual communicators due to this abundance of images available to us

Should you adhere to function or social conventions and idiosyncrasies?

(Do we now just follow trends? Everyone is influenced by everyone)

Look up research about mass media, online communication etc, use websites too but acknowledge that it is journalism

Chapter 3 - Methodology

Cons about chapter 1 and 2 - has the abundance meant that anything is possible?

Posing scholars with the questions as primary research e.g. Rick Poynor and Michael Bierut. Highlight what the answers I find and picking the relevance.
  • What drives design forward?
  • Do design principles still have any relevance in design today?

Conclusion

  • Traits remain within contemporary visual culture
  • Future most likely holds a new Paradigm
  • Graphic design is still exploring the extent of its domain
